A very sincere "Thank You"

Happy Thanksgiving week!

This week instead of focusing on a financial topic, I want to leave you with a positive start to what is a special week for most of us.

Every year at Thanksgiving, my family goes around the table and says what we are grateful for. It’s a fun exercise and validating to hear everyone saying they’re thankful for each other (especially from my kids whose first reaction is “mommy!”—I know that won’t be their answer forever), but it’s also an activity research has shown we should do more often and in-depth.

I was reminded of this yesterday, when opening my mail, I found a note from a friend saying she was thankful for me. It made my day, but that act may have made her week—a study at the University of Pennsylvania showed that writing a note to someone thanking them for a specific kindness or support marked a huge increase in the author’s happiness score with benefits lasting up to a month.

Gratitude studies are diverse. Some show that employees work harder for managers (or practice owners) who say “thank you”. Others demonstrate that couples who show gratitude not only feel more positive toward each other but are also more comfortable addressing concerns about their relationship. Keeping a gratitude journal, or simple writing down/saying aloud one thing you're grateful for each day can have a significant impact on happiness levels.

Don’t just use Thanksgiving as the day to appreciate all the positive things in your life. Find an opportunity to do it every day—it will have a positive impact on your life and those around you.
